Commonsense Tips to Protect School Tech from Damage

There is no denying that while mobile computing devices — Chromebooks, tablets, digital whiteboards, document cameras, e-readers, wearables and virtual reality headsets — can be effective educational tools, they also come with physical security and cybersecurity risks.

Physically, schools must contend with loss, theft, damage, compatibility problems and battery issues. Cyber challenges include data privacy, cyberattacks, insecure Wi-Fi, app security, lack of digital literacy, unauthorized use and social engineering. Meeting these challenges requires a comprehensive approach that brings together multiple solutions, including technology, policies, education and monitoring.

Each school’s situation is unique, so it is crucial to tailor security approaches to fit specific needs, resources and policies. However, there are general recommendations that apply to most schools.

1. Use Tracking and Locking Software to Physically Secure Devices

Schools can use  tracking and locking software solutions to enhance the physical security of mobile devices. These solutions can typically track device locations, remotely lock devices and even wipe data. Schools should look for solutions that align with their device ecosystems and security needs.
