The cool fall weather has arrived and it’s a great time of year for outdoor activities. Beach, lake, mountains, parks, hiking, biking and all kinds of sports…. it’s all there for you.
You can rent or buy adaptive equipment and join a local sports program, or just have some outdoor fun with family and friends. The following are resources for organizations and adaptive equipment that will get you what you need to enjoy the great outdoors and some indoor sports too!
Disabled Sports USA’s mission is to provide national leadership and opportunities for individuals with disabilities to develop independence, confidence, and fitness through participation in community sports, recreation and educational programs.
Sports Abilities: Sports Abilities has a comprehensive resource list for
adapted equipment and lists of adaptive sports programs by state.
New Mobility : Lots of information! Check out the latest articles on sailing, camping and the newest technology in all terrain wheelchairs.
AbleThrive: A list of colleges with sports programs for people with disabilities. Finding information on collegiate adaptive sports programs can be a bit tricky. Oftentimes, this information gets buried on the college website, and digging it up can be an overwhelming task, so AbleThrive makes it easier.
Disabled World: has news and information regarding various sports played by people with disabilities including Paralympics, special Olympics, and other sports and sporting events for people with disabilities.
Move Forward (American Physical Therapy Association): A great resource with lots of great information.
Adaptive Adventures: Providing progressive outdoor sports opportunities to improve quality of life for children, adults and veterans with physical disabilities and their families.
National Pass It On Center: A great resource for gently used equipment. You’ll find links to reuse programs in every state. Many local reuse programs have sports equipment available for loan or purchase at no or low cost.
